ToolsKit Weekly #1: Free AI tools we keep coming back to
The free tiers that survive real use — plus a practical test you can run before you ever enter a credit card.
Every tool directory claims to love a free plan. The question is which free plans survive a week of real work, not a five-minute demo. This is the first ToolsKit Weekly: a hand-checked list of the free AI tiers we actually kept open in the tab bar.
The three free tiers we reach for daily
- ChatGPT's free tier remains the fastest way to ask a question and get a structured answer back. The newest frontier models show up on paid plans first, but for drafting, summarising and asking "explain this like I'm five", the free model is enough for most days.
- Claude's free tier is worth a look when the job is long-form writing or careful editing. Many people find its tone control noticeably better for documents that will be read by humans.
- Gemini's free tier earns its place through tight integration with Google Workspace. If your raw material already lives in Docs or Gmail, it removes the copy-paste step entirely.
None of these three is "the best" in the abstract. They are the ones where the free allowance resets often enough that you never feel blocked mid-task.
A quieter find
Beyond the big three, Perplexity has stayed useful for research because it shows sources inline — which matters when you need to verify a claim instead of just receiving one. And for voice or audio experiments, ElevenLabs' free tier gives enough credits to decide whether the paid jump is worth it. Both are reviewed in depth on our AI tools directory.
How we test a free tier in 5 minutes
- Feed it your real work, not a prompt from a blog. Paste something you would actually send.
- Ask the same question three ways. If it contradicts itself on the facts, that tells you more than a smooth first answer.
- Check the export path. Can you get your output out of the tool and into a document, codebase or design file?
- Read the limits in units you care about — hours of audio, tokens per month, upload size — not just "free".
The honest catch
Free tiers are a deliberate funnel: they are generous enough to form a habit, then the paid upgrade whispers at exactly the moment your work gets serious. That is fine — just know what you are optimising for. If you are comparing plans, every tool page on this site lists the pricing model and whether a real free tier exists, so you can compare like for like.
Next issue: we look at AI video tools and which claims to ignore in the spec sheet.
