Color Extractor
Pull the 5 to 8 dominant colors out of any image, with their share.
Click a swatch to copy its HEX.
The image is decoded and sampled on a canvas in your browser. It is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose an image. It is decoded in the browser and scaled to a long side of 320 pixels for sampling.
- Pick how many colors you want, from 5 to 8.
- Click Extract palette. Each swatch shows its HEX, its RGB values and the share of sampled pixels it covers.
- Click any swatch to copy that single HEX, or copy the whole list with Copy.
- Use Clear to reset the panel and pick another image.
Common use cases
- Matching a design to a photo - take the real colors of a hero image instead of guessing them.
- Building a theme - the shares tell you which color is the background candidate and which are accents.
- Checking a brand photo - see whether the colors in the shot actually match the brand palette.
- Picking paint or thread - a short list of averaged colors is easier to match than a full photo.
Why it stays private
The file is read into memory, drawn on a canvas and sampled there. No request is made and nothing is stored, so photos of people, receipts or unreleased work stay on your device.
FAQ
Q: Why do the shares not add up to 100 percent? A: Each share is the percentage of all sampled pixels, and an image usually contains more hue groups than the 5 to 8 you asked for. The remainder is spread across the colors that did not make the list.
Q: Are the colors exact pixel values from the image? A: No. Each swatch is the weighted average of one hue bucket, which removes sensor noise and gives a color you can actually use.
Q: How are grayscale images handled? A: Near-neutral colors are grouped separately into a dark group and a light group, so a black and white photo returns grays instead of scattered hues.
Q: Does transparency affect the result? A: Pixels with low alpha are skipped, so transparent padding in a PNG does not turn into a color.
