EXIF Viewer
Read EXIF metadata from JPEG photos without uploading them.
EXIF metadata
Metadata appears here after you pick a file.
Parsing happens in your browser. The photo is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose a JPEG photo from your device.
- The parsed metadata appears as a two-column list: tag name on the left, value on the right.
- Look for Orientation to understand why a photo displays sideways, and DateTimeOriginal for the true capture time.
- Click Clear to remove the file from the view before choosing another.
Common use cases
- Checking capture conditions - exposure, ISO, aperture and focal length reveal how a photo was taken.
- Debugging rotation bugs - the Orientation tag explains images that show sideways in one app but upright in another.
- Privacy audits before sharing - see whether a photo carries timestamps or device details you would rather strip.
Why it stays private
The parser reads bytes from the file directly in your browser tab. The photo is never uploaded, so this is safe for images you would not send to an online metadata service.
FAQ
Q: Why does my PNG or HEIC photo show an unsupported message? A: This parser reads the JPEG APP1 EXIF segment specifically. PNG and HEIC store metadata differently, and this tool tells you so instead of guessing. Convert to JPEG first if you need those files checked.
Q: Why do some photos show almost no metadata? A: Social platforms and messaging apps strip EXIF when re-encoding images. Screenshots and edited exports also lack camera tags. An empty result means the data is genuinely absent, not that parsing failed.
Q: Does the viewer use the Orientation tag to display the image? A: No - it reports the tag value as text. The tool reads metadata only and does not render the photo, so nothing is drawn and nothing is processed beyond the EXIF segment.
Your data stays on this device
EXIF Viewer runs 100% locally. Everything you paste or drop is processed by your own browser and never transmitted. Nothing is stored on our servers — close the tab and it is gone.
Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or used for analytics. The page works even with your network disconnected after first load.
