Eye tracking research through a webcam

Visit official site

What RealEye is

A research platform that turns an ordinary webcam into an eye tracker. Participants join from their own laptop, the browser runs a neural network that detects face and pupils and predicts where they are looking, and gaze data comes back for analysis.

It removes the laboratory from eye-tracking studies, which changes who can run them.

What you can do with it

  • Create a study in the browser
  • Gather data from remote participants
  • Analyse gaze data after the session
  • Test websites, mockups and video advertisements
  • Use your own participants or a panel
  • Collect basic facial coding for video testing

Who it is for

  • UX researchers without lab equipment
  • Universities and academic researchers
  • Agencies testing advertising creative
  • Product teams studying page layout

What to watch out for

  • Webcam accuracy is lower than laboratory hardware: the stated figure is around 110 px, which suits page-level questions and not fine detail
  • Participants need a webcam and a modern browser, which biases who can take part
  • Recording faces and gaze is biometric-adjacent data, so consent and retention matter
  • Lighting, webcam quality and participant movement all affect results

Pros & cons

  • Studies run and analysed in one place
  • Participant panel available

! What to watch out for

  • Accuracy is below lab-grade equipment
  • Requires a webcam, which limits participants
